Call For Art: Perceptions of Self(ie)

Register or Login to submit.

The Mosesian Center for the Arts invites artists to submit original work to our upcoming “Perceptions of Self(ie)” Exhibition.

How has the digital age influenced how we capture images and likenesses of ourselves? Where do the similarities lie in how we depict ourselves through new media and how we present ourselves in our art? With this multi-media exhibition, we are looking to explore how artists and non-artists alike address identity through imagery. Perceptions of Self(ie) is an exhibition that examines what we commonly perceive as a self portrait and presents it through a modern lens with the inclusion of new media (digital “selfies”). Artists are invited to submit original self portraits in any "traditional" medium (painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, etc) for this unique exhibition. Artists will also be asked to supply a "selfie" along with their submission. These selfies will be incorporated into the exhibit, along with many other images captured and submitted through social media.

Perceptions of Self(ie) leverages art and technology to address equity, diversity and inclusion through a community building public art exhibition. The project will challenge perceptions around art making accessibility in today’s digital age by utilizing the ubiquitous “selfie” in conjunction with the more traditional portraiture – both of which will be displayed side by side throughout the MCA galleries. The exhibition will take place in all three of our gallery spaces located throughout our 30,000sq ft facility and will extend through the community with the installation of large-scale posters and banners designed to feature the broad array of faces on view in the Perceptions of Self(ie) exhibition. The project also includes a series of free workshops along with our traditional call for art and encourages participants from surrounding communities and beyond to think about the art of the self portrait, and how they approach capturing themselves. This exhibit also seeks to provide an opportunity for anyone who may enter our physical spaces or encounters a community banner, to find a reflection of themselves in the portraits of others.

We invite artists to submit a maximum of 10 original two or three-dimensional works created within the past three years for consideration.
